LHSC – Paediatric Emergency Department Expansion

The Paediatric Emergency Department renovation at LHSC has increased the department’s capacity by 50%, addressing the growing demand resulting from a rise in respiratory illnesses. The design adds 8 new treatment beds, along with two additional procedure rooms, including private spaces for more sensitive treatments such as fracture reductions and suturing. In alignment with LHSC’s broader objectives, the new layout will also better accommodate the mental health needs of child and youth patients.

This $3 million renovation involved close collaboration with user groups to thoroughly understand both their current and future operational requirements. Particular attention was given to the experience of young patients, resulting in a design that incorporates vibrant color palettes, LED lighting, and custom-designed feature walls—elements carefully chosen to create a calming, engaging environment for children.

A significant innovation in this project was the integration of FALKBUILT walls as the primary headwall system for each stretcher bay (a first for LHSC). This solution not only contributed to cost efficiency but also allowed us to meet the tight project timelines by ensuring early delivery of essential medical gas infrastructure, aligning with the hospital’s aggressive scheduling needs.
