In 2017 our office was approached by LHSC to develop a new office/headquarters for the Institute for Clinical Evaluative Sciences (ICES) Western Team. ICES is a not-for-profit research institute (with affiliations to LHSC/Western/Lawson/SJHC) encompassing a community of researchers and clinical experts, and a secure and accessible array of Ontario’s health-related data. Our design was driven by the need to re-use an existing building at Victoria Campus, and generate a space plan that met the team’s performance requirements while resonating with their daily activities. This renovation achieved its goal of talent attraction, retention, and support of new trainees/research investigators for Ontarians as a result of the contemporary and functional design brought to life in the studio.

In the 1960’s, the space was utilized as an on-site church. As such, our office was tasked with documenting the existing condition of the property and determining what was salvageable & what needed to be replaced. Working closely with LHSC, we were able to design the mechanical system using the existing unfinished crawlspace below the primary open area of the building. This allowed for a clean, modern, and unobstructed view of the two storey windows. A sense of openness and natural light was important to the overall feel/working conditions for their staff, and was heavily considered throughout the design stages. We also helped their team determine office “place types” using a Living Office approach to space planning. Fundamentally, this provided alternative places for research to occur between team members, and promoted the concept of humanity in the workplace.
